The beach in Wellington is owned by the Province of Ontario and managed by Prince Edward County. Prior to circa 2005, it was an undeveloped natural waterfront area that was seldom accessed, other than by some local residents who were familiar with the area.
In 2005, the Rotary Club of Wellington, as part of Rotary's Centennial, chose to undertake the development of the Wellington Beach Park. It was a major project for the Club and the community, requiring significant funding and coordination of all approval authorities, not to mention the sweat equity donated by Rotarians and other volunteers.
The Wellington Beach Park project changed an undeveloped site into a connection between the Wellington community and Lake Ontario, Wellington Harbour and West Lake. The facilities provide for Prince Edward County citizens, and visitors alike, to enjoy the beachfront, walkways, a designated swimming area, enhanced lake and harbour views, change rooms, washrooms, benches, limestone sitting stones, and a second sun shelter.
In 2008/2009 the Club completed its multi-year beach improvement project, building picinic tables, a boardwalk and pathway, benches, sunshelter, washroom / changeroom, and 13 interpretive signs on the following subjects: overview of the beach, the geography of the beach, the early days, early fishing on Wellington beach, the days of sail and steam, shipwrecks, lifesaving stations, and lifeboats, the fish of Lake Ontario, the fish of West Lake, birds found in and around West Lake, birds of the beach and open Lake Ontario, local birds of the treed area, indigenous plants - and a list of donors to the project.
Today, the Wellington Rotary beach is a great place to walk, sunbathe, swim, picnic, canoe, kayak, launch your boat, and explore the interpretive signage along the boardwalk pathway.
In April 2008, the area was named Wellington Rotary Beach by County Council resolution, in recognition of the work accomplished.
Every Spring, typically on Earth Day, the Rotary Club of Wellington organizes a Beach Cleanup event for Rotarians and volunteers from the community, to remove winter debris and generally cleanup the beach area in preparation for the summer season.
