Speaker This Week: John Hatch - Classification Talk
President’s Weekly Bulletin
I am very aware that Rotary is a non-religious, non-political organization. Nevertheless, the aggressive goings on in the world now are extremely concerning.
I dare to say that we could be on the brink of a third World War and the scary part is that there are leaders on each side who thrive on this type of confrontational event with their own interest at heart, rather than their people, which takes the focus away from situations while trying to dissuade popular attention.
Ramping up a war machine increases jobs and government profits. It also improves the unemployment numbers and hence revs up the economy. The most important downsides, of course, are the tragedies and loss of life on both sides.
We are extremely fortunate that we, as Canadians, have not been dragged into the conflicts yet. We can only hope and pray that this does not occur. Our sons and daughters, and grandsons and granddaughters, are very precious and are our legacies. We can hope that cooler intelligent heads prevail. Let the calmest of leaders rise to the surface and prevent catastrophes that could be irreversible.
We, as Rotarians, will be ready to assist in any way we can, anywhere we are needed. In the meantime, we continue to assist in our own communities through food banks, homelessness initiatives, and assisting our seniors in need wherever possible.

Rotary meeting minutes April 7, 2026 Notes by: Geoff Telling
In attendance: 30 members in person, three members joining on Zoom, three joining on Zoom as guests from the Middleton Rotary Club, Nova Scotia, and one guest (of Margo), returning for a second visit, in person, Conrad Guziewicz.
Past President Lyn opened the meeting at 7:07 and David Hawkins’s invocation included special words for our fellow Rotarian Kim Lee, who was undergoing extensive surgery today.
Guest Speaker:
Dave Robinet introduced our guests from the Rotary Club of Middleton, Nova Scotia, Michael and Belle Fairn and Bryson Crowell, who explained the origins of the “Goldmine” Draw, how it includes local businesses as part of a team of sellers to participants and how the lottery functions. It also included the advertising benefits to local businesses. The Rotarians from Nova Scotia, the lead speaker, his fellow Rotarian, Michael, and his wife, Belle, who is also a friend of Rotary, gave many examples of how this fundraiser operates. The floor was then opened for questions which were detailed and probing. These were fielded by the representatives from Nova Scotia, Dave Robinet and others, and there was some focus on the possible pitfalls with numerous questions clarifying all aspects of the fundraising scheme. Martha thanked the Rotarians from Nova Scotia.
Margo then took to the floor to present an alternative 50-50 option, an on-line lottery. This presented all sorts of possibilities and was in many ways quite different from the plan suggested by the “Goldmine” lottery. Margo presented this as a possible alternative to the Middleton model and Dave R was supportive.
Club Business:
In other business, Phyo explained that the building of the accessibility ramp for Kate’s rest was going ahead and an ad hoc committee has been struck to complete that work.
Martha, on Zoom, updated the Club on information for hosting Rotary Youth Exchange recipients.
Bottle Billy updated on the Bottle Depot schedule.
Past President Lyn gave us all a reminder that, on April 25th, we have our annual beach cleanup and barbecue. Norm was congratulated on his birthday. Happy twoonies were given and the 50-50 draw was held. John Heeringa had the winning weekly draw ticket but didn’t find the ace of spades.
The meeting was closed with the 4 Way Test at 8.35 am.
