President's Message
This weekend I was away working, shooting in Toronto at the Toronto Triathlon Festival. For the event organizers, It takes planning, a ton of volunteer hours, dedication, sweat equity, people to take registration of athletes, course and route planning, obtaining permits, organizing police presence for traffic control and many, many more things.
When I look around at all of the things that are going on in our own community, it reminds me of some of our own activities, and in particular the bottle depot.
Every week, Bottle Bill sends out his schedule to be filled looking for people to work the various shifts.
We are lucky that we have so many great people in our club, as the slots get filled almost every week. Occasionally we have to put out SOS’s to fill some last minute openings, but someone always steps up.
But it goes beyond the weekly scheduling by bottle Bill, there is also the co-ordination to get the bins picked up and ordering of supplies, so that we can do it all over again next week and beyond.
This is where the planning, dedication and volunteerism comes in.
We have seen recently some new faces at the bottle depot with Friends of Rotary. I am hoping that we can boost our friends of Rotary so that it will ease some of the volunteer hours by our current members.

Last Week: Mike Branscombe & Greg Gorsline (Fire Prevention & Safety)
Since amalgmation to PEC, all responses to 911 calls go to Picton. The fire prevention and safety division is part of that unit. They focus on code enforcement and public education. Mike and Greg are full time fire fighters, helped by volunteer fire fighters. The fire prevention and safety division has an annual budget of $20,000 for public education. 4 booklets were produced: Rules Safety, Water Safety, Fire Safety, and Seniors Safety. There are overall 75 sponsors in the community that contribute to the $20K budget to produce over 1000 booklets. They provide fire safety education for kid and also provides tours and workshops and classroom education.
The division also does code enforcement, including inspection orders and fines. One of the most important is to make sure smoke and CO alarms are in every building. If an emergency occurs, people typically have only 2 minutes to escape, so a home escape plan is very important.
The fire prevention and safety division provides the community a safety net with the help of sponsors like the Wellington Rotary.
