Its late Sunday night and I just got home from Lake Placid. Its funny how things creep up on you when you procrastinate.
So this weekend was busy getting the deck finished and yard work done om Friday before I headed off for Lake Placid Saturday morning to shoot a half Ironman event this weekend.
The drive is always nice heading into New York State and in particular the Adirondacks. The weather was great for the first three hours then rain came and it pretty much continued for the rest of the trip and overnight. Shooting these triathlon events, we shoot rain or shine, but we would much rather shoot in clear weather.
Sunday morning was chilly in the mountains and my first bike shot was along the cascade lakes. At least I was dressed for it, but all the time I was thinking about the athletes. First they swim in that very chilly water, then onto the bike course. Most of them have bare legs and light shirts. You gotta think that the wind is killing them.
My final shot location was at the finish line. Even though these athletes endured a lot, cold water, wind and a little rain, it is great to see them cross the finish line with some of the biggest smiles on their faces and some with tears of joy. It was a first for many and there were tears of joy and being overwhelmed with what they had just completed.
It is a great lesson for all of us. With training, hard work and perseverance you can accomplish just about anything that you put your mind to.
Last Week: DG Beth Selby
Guest Speaker - District Governor Beth Shelby
District 7070 DG Beth Shelby was introduced by ADG Shirley Ross. Beth worked in the education sector, and is an accomplished administrator at the school board and district level. Beth began her remarks by sharing her “Rotary moment” experience as host to an exchange student from Mexico.

Beth then presented her 8 district goals, which not surprisingly include increasing the district participation in the student exchange program to 20 international students.
Beth concluded her remarks by outlining the program for the 2019 District Conference. It will be held this year from Oct. 25-27 in Muskoka. Registration for the conference is $349 per person, and accommodation at the resort is $175 per night. Information and registration can be found at www.rotary7070conference.org.
