President's Message

Service Above Self.  On Sunday, at the Memorial Garden Dedication ceremony, we honoured passed Wellington Rotarians who had embraced this motto in serving their community …our community.   The proceedings were heartfelt and informal … memories were shared, unearthing old friendships, and enabling new connections.  It was wonderful to see the many conversations before and after the official program.  Truly a reflection of the impact the 8 honourees (Don Wight, Chuck McWilliams, John Mulder, Gord Lloyd, Gil VanSoelen, Art Sinclair, Brian McGowan, Jim Van Kregten) had on our Rotary Club.  A few pictures have been added to the bulletin, but I also encourage you to check out the many photos that have been posted on Facebook, thanks to our photographer, Dave Robinet.

And, a big thank you to the organizing committee:  Peter, Lyn, Linda, Lana & Howard.  Well done!

This is a busy week, with World Polio Day celebrations on Thursday October 21st.   The Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood will be hosting a LiveStream event from Durham College from 7:00 to 8:30pm on Thursday evening.  The event will feature Dr. Bob Scott (past Rotary International Vice-President and Immediate Past Chair of the Rotary International Polio Plus Committee ), Shekhar Mehta (President Rotary International), Valarie Wafer (Vice-President and Director of Rotary International) and Mike McGovern (current Chair of the Rotary International Polio Plus Committee).  Together, they will update all of us about Rotary's efforts with our Global Polio Eradication Initiative Partners to End Polio Now.  For those that wish to participate, the livestream event is available to all Rotary Clubs in District 7070…  HERE IS THE LINK .

Last Week:  Birgit Wartenberg (IPPC)

The meeting opened on time with 25 members attending in person, 4 by Zoom plus our guest speaker, Birgit Wartenberg. MPres Trudy and Pierre up-dated the Club on the health sutuations of Kim and Dick who are recuperating from knee surgery and a stroke, respectively.

John Inwood introduced Birgit Wartenberg who has been a member of the Belleville Club since 2009 representing the Indigenous Peoples Partnerships Cluster. After working in senior positions for DuPont for ten years, Birgit set up her own business, Wartenberg Business Consulting, and has continued to work on behalf of indigenous people in several roles. Founded in 2010 and undergoing a number of changes of title, the initiative currently known as the Indigenous Peoples Partnership Cluster (IPPC) aims to assist economic development and provide appropriate support in native communities across Ontario. It is supported by four District Clubs; Wellington, Belleville, Palgrave and Trenton.

Birgit has visited and presented to the Club on three previous occasions and after briefly touching on the IPPC’s aims and objectives, had decided to share more anecdotal evidence of what kinds of things are happening in the project. Throughout, she stressed the importance of community engagement, allowing for local direction and ‘ownership’ of the specific initiatives. This is particularly important because of the remoteness of many communities spread across the Province and the logistical difficulties of moving materials and people into them. Birgit touched on many examples of the activity that has been and is taking place: Roxanne in Fort Albany, Mary of Little Trout Lake, Kids against Hunger in Thunder Bay, Sudbury & Kenora, Bursaries in Tyendinaga, Oshweken & Fort William, Dave in Nibinamick. In all these cases, so much depends on establishing and maintained effective contacts in the indigenous communities and sustaining the support of Chiefs in Band Councils. Other initiatives that Birgit referred to, in her PowerPoint presentation, were St Joseph’s Catholic School in Belleville sending life jackets to students in the north, the Kairos blanket exercise as a fundraiser for women’s shelters in Tyendinaga & Fort Hope, backpacks for Tipi Moza, purses of hygiene products for women in Tyendinaga, Art for Aid, “I love First People”. She also directed us to the Cluster’s website www.rotaryindigenouscluster.com. Answering questions, Birgit responded to David McKinnon’s point about opportunities for economic development and Christine’s reflections on the provision of hockey and other sporting equipment to indigenous communities.

Birgit was thanked by Liz, who explained how the Club’s donation of $1,000 had been spent by the IPPC, and by John Heeringa.

In Club business, all Bill’s bottle depot volunteer needs were met for this week, Howard gave the latest details on the Rotary Memorial Garden dedication on Sunday 17th and Pumpkinfest weighing. MPres Trudy will bring name badges to the event and there will be refreshments. Peter Campbell will be M/C. Pres Elect Ken advised members of more opportunities to volunteer at the vaccination clinic. Bearing in mind the scaled-down nature of breakfast refreshments, set-up teams were apprised of the need to arrive by 6.30 to prepare coffee etc and remain to clear and clean up. MPres Trudy mentioned the “Uncorked Canada” event organised by the Picton Club with wine available for a donation. There is an opportunity for grape-picking at Lynn’s again on Thursday. Peter’s birthday and John H’s anniversary were recognised and the meeting closed at 8.30 after the Four Way Test.

Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all

Rotary Song

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
