President's Message
Four years ago, the Fundraising Committee met, and one of the topics was the fact that we had no Club events during the long winter months from January to March. We felt that we should either have a fundraising event, or at the very least, an event that would be fun for our members and serve the community as well. So that was how the idea of having a Family Day community event came to be. Past President Alex Lacher took it upon himself to coordinate the event, and invited the Lions Club and various organizations in the County, and with the help of Lisa Lindsay from the County, we launched our first Family Day community event in 2017. It was a resounding success and it brought many members of our community together to celebrate with our children and families. This year's event promises to be no different. As in previous years, our Club will be coordinating the Free Soup venue. There are over a dozen soup providers from community who will be serving free soup. We will also have our Free Learning Program as well as hand painting stations. Our mascot BEE will also be on hand to promote the Rotary Spelling Bee convened at various schools in the County. The Lion's Club will also be running their photo booth, games and activities. It is truly a community wide event. This is an example of how Rotary Connects the World, one community at a time.
Talking about Rotary Connects the World, Past President Mike & his wife Liz, and Trudy & I were recently in Chiangmai, Thailand. We came upon a cycle Rickshaw driver who was sponsored by the local Rotary Club there and he had on a Rotary shirt. There was instant connection between the rickshaw driver and PP Mike who was also wearing his District 7070 Rotary shirt.

PEC Skate Club
Sarah Waterston, her daughter Meredith, and Stephanie Crenshaw provided an update of the activities of Prince Edward County Skate Club (PECSC).
The PECSC has about 90 skaters registered, and they provide a growth mindset for the skaters with a focus on process and effort. The skate club tries to be as inclusive as possible, and ensures that there are no financial barriers to participation, by subsidizing under privileged kids.
They have 3 major programs, namely: Pre-Canskate, which is a half hour/week program the teaches basic skating skills for new skaters. The skaters can then graduate to Canskate which is a 50 minute per week program. Rising Star is the next level, and it is essentially a transition to figure skating. The highest level is Star Skate, which teaches figure skating with 10 levels of competence.
The programs keep the kids busy, and the exercises promote good coordination and healthy kids.
The skate club is currently preparing for their biennial "Under the Sea" carnival on Sunday April 5, 2020 from 2-4 pm at the Wellington arena. It will showcase the skills of skaters and it is a "free will" donation event. A donation from the Rotary Club to help fund the event would be welcomed.
The skate club incurs some high expenses. For examples, it costs $150/hr for securing ice time for practices, coaching fees, and cost of costumes. In order to save on cost of skates, they have instituted a skate sharing program where younger kids can use the skates that older kids have out-grown.
