Members of our club come through again and again to help make things better for others in the community. Well this week was not much different than others. We get a call for help and there we are: Halloween night was and almost always is a busy night all around the county. We were asked if we could help support our local Junior A hockey club ( The Duke’s ) with a free skate, games and a haunted house being held at the Community center. Ted Nash, David & Shirley Smith, Barry Davidson, Pierre LeBrun and Rotary Exchange Student Ann from the Picton club, were all in attendance helping to make an evening a little more fun. I am sure that it was greatly appreciated by many too, as it got people out of some nasty weather.
Great job guys. You help to make our Rotary Club what it is.
Now speaking about nasty weather. Wasn’t that something Thursday night and through Friday. Some say that we had some sustaining winds of up to 100 km per hour. As you know, power was out for some for over 24 hours and trees and hydro poles were even split in two right down town.
When you think about it, we have been pretty lucky here in the County and in Canada in general. I’m not sure what strength of wind we had, but it sure felt like it could have been a lower grade hurricane. Just image what people go thought that actually do sit out a tropical storm or hurricane.
With the high winds comes rough water, and that is certainly what we had. Friday morning, Mary & I went down to Rotary Beach to take a few photo’s. Just as I thought, the water had washed up over the shore line and there was 2 to 3 feet of water in the parking area. There was lots of debris that washed up on shore and I can see that another clean up will be required in the spring or sooner depending on the weather.
I have included a couple of photo’s to go with it. You might notice that the little lighthouse that marks the channel looks to be tilting a little. I’m not sure if this is the case, but if it is, then it will also need some major work to rectify it. I believe that is a County thing.
I have included an image from the other day.
