President’s Weekly Bulletin - Growth through Service
Late May in Prince Edward County feels like a season of momentum. The gardens are planted, boats are returning to the water, and the steady hum of visitors begins to build. It’s a time when our community shifts from preparation to action—and that makes it a perfect moment to reflect on a simple but powerful theme: growth through service.
Growth isn’t always dramatic. More often, it’s quiet and steady. A seed planted weeks ago begins to break through the soil. A relationship built over coffee turns into a meaningful partnership. A small Rotary project, once just an idea around a table, becomes something that touches lives across our community. These are the kinds of moments that define both this season and our work as Rotarians.
In Rotary, we often focus on outcomes—funds raised, a new hospital build, or organizations and people supported. And those outcomes matter deeply. But behind every result is a process of growth. Growth in our understanding of community needs. Growth in our ability to collaborate. Growth in our willingness to step forward and lead.
This time of year, also invites us to think about renewal. Just as the County welcomes new energy with the changing season, Rotary thrives when new ideas and new voices are encouraged. Whether it’s a prospective member attending their first meeting, a fresh approach to a long-standing fundraiser, or a new partnership with another organization, renewal keeps our club vibrant and relevant.
Of course, growth also requires care and attention. Gardens don’t flourish without tending, and neither do communities. The work we do—whether addressing food insecurity, supporting youth, or protecting our natural environment—requires consistency and commitment. It’s not always glamorous, but it is always meaningful.
There’s also something to be said for patience. In both gardening and service, results don’t happen overnight. We may not always see the immediate impact of our efforts, but that doesn’t make them any less important. In fact, some of the most meaningful change happens gradually, over time, through sustained effort and shared purpose.
As Arnold Palmer once said, “The road to success is always under construction.” That sentiment feels especially fitting for this time of year. Both our community and our Rotary work are always evolving—shaped by the contributions of those willing to show up and do the work.
As we move through these final weeks of spring, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the role each of us plays in that process of growth. Every meeting attended, every hour volunteered, every idea shared contributes to something larger than us.
So, as the County comes alive around us, let’s continue to nurture the things that matter—our projects, our partnerships, and our sense of purpose. Because, like any well-tended garden, the seeds we plant today will shape the community we enjoy tomorrow.
