President's Message

With November 2020 being our Club’s 18th anniversary, I did some checking in ClubRunner to dig up some interesting facts about our Wellington Rotary membership. Anyone who has been a member for a number of years, will have seen a lot of changes in our Club. Our Club started with 20 members, of which, 5 are still with us. We’ve recently grown to 41 members, plus another candidate has submitted her application, and one more person has attended 2 of their 3 required meetings.  Also, of note, as of November 22, our Club has had approximately 100 different members pass through our doors. As a Club, we need to recognize and appreciate how our new membership can take us into new directions and we should celebrate the change and vitality it will bring our Club.

A little more history from the Club’s Charter Night event, November 28, 2002:

  • Grace was led by Charter Member John Dulmage

  • The National Anthem was sung by Jeanette Arsenault

  • The Queen was toasted

  • Leo Finnegan, who was Picton Rotary’s Immediate Past President, chaired the event and introduced the head table

  • Don Stanton, Picton Rotary’s President, gave the General Welcome

  • Jeanette Arsenault sang “My Canada”

  • District Governor – Nominee Bill MacKay introduced the Dinner Speaker, District Governor Richard Clark, and DG Richard Clark presented the Charter to our Club.

  • Wellington Rotary Club President, Jim Bancroft, provided the Club’s response and acceptance

Last Tuesday, I attended the District’s Annual General Meeting which was very efficiently managed. The quorum of presidents approved a number of motions, including the District’s Financial Statements for the past year. At the end of the meeting, DG Mark Chipman asked the Clubs to provide the amounts they raised from their Foundation Walk, so we should see a District grand total soon. The other discussion was around the missed Chicago trip to Rotary International’s headquarters. This is a tremendous experience for incoming presidents, but it’s been temporarily postponed due to the COVID situation.

In closing, I ask you to limber up your vocal cords for tomorrow’s meeting; we will be singing “O’ Canada” and maybe more. Bring on Jeanette Arsenault!

Last Week:
Steve Rutledge (Beirut Recovery Global Grant)

President Howard opened the meeting by introducing guests, including guest presenters, and the Sgt at Arms reported 20 members present in person & 14 more joining by Zoom. Outreach to member Sharon is showing positive results.

Parker introduced Andrew (?) and Steve Rutledge who are both very active Rotarians in our district and have collaborated on a project to assist the Lebanese subsequent to the Beirut explosion that destroyed or damaged seven hospitals. Steve jumped in to work with other Rotarians and the Rotary Club of Beirut Cosmopolitan to fund and otherwise support efforts to restore medical services, particularly for pediatric patients who were so badly affected by the didaster. Steve explained the work that has already started and the fund-raising efforts including a Global Grant initiative. He showed a video that gave a very clear picture of the scale of the challenges and the extreme need. More information, including how to donate, can be found at Beirut7070.com.

Steve answered questions and was thanked by Lana.

Bill’s bottle needs covered until the end of the month.

Lana up-dated the Club on Christmas Angels. Targets had been met or exceeded.

Buck Bucanan channelled a request for volunteer help with the Legion Christmas dinner and Lana gave details of the alternate monday evening meals available from the Legion.

Trudy explained about the possibility of purchasing Rotary Covid masks for which there was interest. Michelle was congratulated for completing the collection of monies for auction items.

Phyo reported on the latest CEDC meeting which he, and other members, had attended. The master plan for Wellington Rotary Beach area, which was supposed to have been completed last February, has been superceded by the creation of a task force which is due to produce its report by March 2021. The was some discussion of related issues.   Click HERE to view our Club's presentation to CEDC from Nov 16.

The meeting ended at 8:11 a.m. with the four way test.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
        1.  Is it the TRUTH?
        2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
        3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
             FRIENDSHIPS?
        4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
