President's Message

Tuesday marks the end of my term as President of our club. It is sort of bitter sweet. One part of me is relieved and the other part is like I’m losing something.

First off I want to thank everyone in the club for your support and contributions that you all made to various events and activities that we held throughout the year. Without your help and support we wouldn’t be able to accomplish the things that we did.

I want to give a special shout out to Past President Phyo for guiding me along the way, as I leaned on him multiple times for expertise, advice, and direction.

It has been a great learning experience for me, one that I thought I would never take on. It came with some challenges and hurdles, but we got through them.

These past few months saw a new mode of operating as the Covid Pandemic gained momentum and we did what we could to keep in contact with our members and held our meetings via Zoom. That is one of the great things that we as Rotarians do - adapt.

With this ever changing world and times, we managed to stay connected and find new ways work around the challenges that we face on a daily basis.

Thank you everyone, I will continue to do what I can to support our club and the great community we live in.

President Dave Robinet

Last Week:
Matthew O'Connor & Pascaline Phillips M.D.
Safe Technology

President Dave Robinet called the Zoom video conferencing meeting to order at 7:07 a.m. with 24 Rotarians present and accounted for, and Matthew O'Connoir and Dr. Pascaline Phillips as guest speakers.

Matthew is a Boston University business graduate, who played professional hockey in Europe and now lives in Cherry Valley. Pascaline Phillips is a medical doctor and has a naturopathic clinic in Picton.

Their topic of presentation is to build awareness for the dangers and adverse effects of Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) generated by wireless and cell phone technologies.

As our population becomes more and more dependent on internet connectivity, and as the County strives to enhance internet connectivity within the community, there are more and more wireless towers being  erected, and the regulations for putting up cell repeaters are pretty lax.  Matthew and Pascaline's mission is to lobby our County councillors and mayor to pay closer attention to protecting the health and well being of the County's citizens as applications for cell towers and repeaters are permitted.

With the advent of ubiquitous connectivity between people, as well as between things (also known as Internet of Things), an ultra fast wireless technology called 5G is becoming more prevalent.  This 5G technology transmits radio waves at higher frequency bands and with greater intensity, which may be harmful for humans and animals if endured in prolonged exposure.  EMF's adverse impact on health can cause fatigue, weakness, headaches, arrhythmia, infertility, etc..

Matthew and Pascaline acknowledges the need for internet connectivity in today's society, but they suggest that wired FibreOptic connectivity is safer for us than wireless cell or 5G connectivity.  For more information about the dangers of 5G and EMFs, Matthew has generated a FaceBook page called "PEC for Safe Technology".

In other club business:
  1. Treasurer Trudy indicated that the Rotary Club of Stirling would be dropping off a large shipment of bottles and cans at the Bottle Depot from their bottle drive fundraiser.  This is a good example of two Rotary Clubs working together.
  2. Karen Selick will be vacating her Board position as Director for the coming year, which will create an opening for a new Board Member for the Communications & Literacy Chair.
  3. David Smith announced that the Ontario Provincial Ministry of Health has approved the building of the new hospital in PEC to replace PECMH.  We now enter into Phase 3 - detailed design of the new hospital.  The Rotary Club of Wellington has signed up for donating $400,000 to the new hospital building fund.  Everyone in the Club is encouraged to actively support and participate in raising funds for this cause.
  4. David McKinnon was congratulated for his advancement to the position of Chairman of the Board of Quinte Health Care for the coming year.
  5. Phyo reminded everyone that since we will not be able to have the Past President's dinner, we will be having the year-end presentations and president's speech at the June 30th club forum.

Rotary Song Lyrics:

R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.
R-O-T-A-R-Y, is known on land and sea.
From north to south, and east to west,
They profit most who serve the best,
R-O-T-A-R-Y, that spells Rotary.

Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, and do:
1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and better
     FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
